What do the sleep stages on Fitbit mean? Provided below are the three sleep stages used on Fitbit, what they mean, and what happens in each of them!

1. Light Sleep on Fitbit

Light sleep is the first stage of sleep on Fitbit. At this stage, your sleep is shallow and not restful.

You don’t stay in this stage for very long because it is a quick transition. While on the light sleep stage, you still hear things and still have a sense of awareness.

This is the stage where your brain deeps into sleep but you don’t feel like you are asleep. If you were to be woken up at this stage of sleep, you would get up so quickly.

2. Deep Sleep on Fitbit

Deep sleep is the second stage of sleep. It is the stage where you respond less, your muscles become relaxed and breathing slows.

The deep sleep stage is when the body starts repairing and rebuilding the body. Dreams still don’t happen at this stage.

Deep sleep is so important because it helps make your immune system become even stronger.

3. REM Sleep on Fitbit

During the REM sleep the body becomes 100% inactive and the brain becomes very active, it is at this stage you get dreams.

While in REM sleep, the eyes move repeatedly from side to side. At this stage, your breathing becomes more irregular and you have an increased heart rate.

Note: Fitbit will cycle through these sleep stages multiple times through the night. On average a sleep cycle can last for up to 90 minutes before entering the next sleep stage and sometimes it can be short like 50 minutes.

I have two Fitbit smartwatches I consider best for tracking sleep and they are Versa 3 and Sense.

Fitbit Versa 3 and Sense will track your movement and heart rate accurately and use the details to determine your sleep report or readings.

Their battery life is also good, if you charge either of the smartwatches to completion before going to bed it lasts for 12 hours, which is enough to monitor each sleep stage you enter while asleep.

2 Ways You Can Improve Sleep Readings on Fitbit?

There is no apparent means of improving your sleep reports or readings however, Fitbit will suggest a number of ways you can improve your readings.

1. Avoid alcohol

Alcohol can make you fall asleep quickly however,  most of the time when you are under the influence of alcohol you tend to wake up a lot during the night and that affects your sleep scores or reading. If you have to consume alcohol make sure it is not before bed.

2. Get in Bed on Time

You need to come up with a regular sleep time and wake-up time to improve your sleep readings. You can use your Fitbit to remind you it’s time for bed and time to wake up with its alarm.
