Should I Buy a Used Fitbit? (Go Ahead, But Be Careful!)

Fitbit smartwatches and fitness trackers, especially those with built-in sensors like GPS, come at high prices, and since the prices are high people opt for pre-owned ones as it’s the only way they can spend less. But, should you buy a used Fitbit?

The idea of buying a used Fitbit is both good and bad at the same time. Buying a used Fitbit is good because you pay less and save more than the person buying it new. On the other hand, purchasing a pre-owned Fitbit is not a good idea because it’s likely the watch is malfunctioning, and the seller is getting rid of it.

In this simple guide, we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of purchasing a used Fitbit. We will also provide you with tips on what to look for when buying a second-hand Fitbit and what actions to take after purchasing a pre-owned Fitbit. So, let’s get started without any further delay!

Why You Should Buy a Used Fitbit?

1. It is More Affordable

I would suggest buying a used Fitbit because it is cheaper than buying a brand-new one. Opting for a used Fitbit allows you to spend less and keep some extra cash in your pocket.

Why You Should Not Buy a Used Fitbit?

1. New Models Are Released From Time to Time

I do not recommend purchasing used Fitbit watches as the company regularly releases new versions of their watch models. This means that you may end up with an older version than what is currently available.

For example, if you purchased the Fitbit Sense, the Fitbit Sense 2 was released and replaced it. Similarly, if you bought the Fitbit Charge 4, it has been replaced by the Charge 5, and the Fitbit Inspire 2 has been replaced by the Inspire 3.

Since Fitbit frequently releases new versions of its watch models, I strongly advise against buying used Fitbit watches.

2. The Fitbit May Be Dead or Broken

For me, buying a used Fitbit device is not a great idea because you never know why the previous owner is selling it. They may be selling it because they have discovered a problem with it, especially after the warranty period has expired.

Don’t get me wrong, not everyone will sell you a broken or damaged Fitbit, but some people might, so be very cautious when buying a second hand tracker or smartwatch.

What to Check for Before Buying a Used Fitbit Watch

1. Check the Condition of the Fitbit Watch

Shops usually allow customers to inspect phones before making a purchase, so you should do the same when buying a watch. Request the seller to let you check the watch properly. While inspecting the watch do the following:

  • Examine the bands and ensure that the two areas it attaches to are in good condition. You certainly don’t want to buy a Fitbit with bands that keep detaching.
  • Check the battery to ensure that it is not draining excessively since you don’t want to spend more time charging the device.
  • Verify that the screen is functioning correctly since some people might sell their Fitbit because the screen is unresponsive.
  • Furthermore, don’t buy a used Fitbit watch that has a cracked screen because it may not respond to touches in the future.

If the seller refuses to let you test the device, it’s better not to buy it since there’s likely a problem. It’s best to buy a new Fitbit that comes with a warranty period so that if a problem arises, you can return it for free repair or replacement.

What Should You Do After Buying a Used Fitbit?

The next crucial step to take after purchasing a used Fitbit device is to check whether the personal data of the previous user is still available on the device. If the data on the device belongs to someone else, you cannot use it to track your health and fitness activities.

In this case, you need to disconnect from the account the best way to do so is by resetting your Fitbit to wipe all the user data held by the device.

Fortunately, the process of resetting a Fitbit is short and straightforward. I have already created a post on resetting all Fitbit watches to clear user data. Even so, here are a few steps that will help you reset some Fitbit watch models:

Step 1: On your Fitbit go to settings.

Step 2: Find the About option and tap on it.

Step 3: Under the About option find the Clear User Data or Factory Reset option and tap on it.

Step 4: Follow the simple on-screen instructions to complete the reset process.

Once you have cleared the used data, the next step is to set up your second-hand Fitbit. Fortunately, the process of setting up a Fitbit whether new or second hand is also easy.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I Give My Fitbit to Someone Else?

Yes, you can! However, before handing over your Fitbit watch or tracker to someone else, make sure to reset the watch to disconnect it from your Fitbit account.

Final Thoughts

Buying a second-hand or used Fitbit is a great way to save money. However, it is important to be cautious when purchasing a used Fitbit because some may be sold due to damage or malfunction. Before making the purchase, ensure that you inspect and test the pre-owned Fitbit to ensure that it is functioning properly. If you are unable to inspect and test, it is best to consider purchasing a new Fitbit that comes with a warranty in case of any future malfunctions. I hope this post was helpful.
